John chapter 6 gets off to a promising start. Huge crowds follow Jesus, he provides miraculous food for them in the desert, and they want to make him king. He is king! They’ve worked it out! And yet, Jesus runs away from them, and by the end of the chapter a large majority of those who wanted to make him king have stopped following him. Why?

Jesus, it turns out, has a healthy skepticism about the sort of faith miraculous signs produce. The sign of the bread was a sign that Jesus was the Bread of life. But if all you’re interested in is the bread, then Jesus is not your bread, he’s just your Bread-Supply option. If the bread stops coming, or if you find a cheaper, easier way to get bread, then, “No hurt feelings Jesus, but we’re outta here! See you next time.” Jesus, in other words, was not their king.

The question for us is:

Is Jesus your bread-maker, or is he your Bread?

Is the one from whom your currently get treasures, or is he your Treasure?

Is he useful, or is he beautiful?

When the bread stops (that is, when the gifts of Jesus aren’t as obvious or attractive) or when we think we can get bread elsewhere (i.e, we think we can find what Jesus was giving us somewhere else or from someone else)—that’s when we discover the truth. At the point of pain, we discover if Jesus was our Bread, or merely our temporary bread-supplier.

For many of us, we live in “peace-time”. We love Jesus, and we love the gifts of Jesus. That’s fine! But now is the time to be cultivating a heart for Jesus, so that, when it’s just Jesus, then Jesus is enough.

Yours,
