Prayer
At Prov Midland, we want to develop a rich community of prayer, ensuring everyone has someone praying with and for them. Part of doing this includes developing the practice of prayer, and making it a part of your everyday life.
If you struggle to find the words to pray, or focus while praying, here are 10 prayers from the Book of Common Prayer, and below we’ve attach a resource to Peter Adam’s Daily Prayer Book as he shared on The Gospel Coalition‘s website.
You can also find a link below to our 3 part sermon series from June 2021 on the topic of Prayer.
We invite all our attendees to be involved with prayer either in a Growth Group, or a Prayer Trio (or both!), where people can pray with and for one another, growing as part of a community of prayer. Email us if you want to be a part of either or both of these options!
10 Prayers from the Book of Common Prayer
1. CONFESSION
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed:
we have not loved you with our whole heart,
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us.
Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
2. THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.
3. A MORNING PRAYER
Lord our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God,
we thank you for bringing us safely to this day:
keep us by your mighty power,
and grant that today we fall into no sin,
neither run into any kind of danger,
but lead and govern us in all things,
that we may always do what is righteous in your sight;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
4. AN EVENING PRAYER
Be present, merciful God,
and protect us through the hours of this night:
that we, who are wearied
by the changes and chances of this fleeting world,
may rest on your eternal changelessness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
5. GENERAL THANKSGIVING
Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants
give you humble and heartfelt thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all people.
We praise you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your measureless love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ,
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give us that due sense of all your mercies,
that our hearts may be truly thankful,
and that we hold forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but also in our lives;
by giving up ourselves to your service,
and by walking before you in holiness
and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honour and glory, now and forever. Amen.
6. PRAYER FOR PROTECTION
O God, the author and lover of peace,
in knowledge of whom stands our eternal life,
whose service is perfect freedom;
defend us your servants
in all assaults of our enemies,
that, surely trusting in your defence,
we may not fear the power of any adversaries,
through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
7. PRAYER FOR ALL PEOPLE
O God, creator and preserver of all mankind:
we humbly pray for all sorts and conditions of people,
that you would be pleased to make your way known to them,
your saving power among all nations.
Especially we pray for the welfare of your church,
that it may be guided and governed by your good Spirit,
so that all who profess and call themselves Christians
may be led into the way of truth
and hold the faith in unity of spirit,
in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life.
We commend to your fatherly goodness
all who are in any way afflicted or distressed,
that it may please you to comfort and relieve them
according to their needs,
giving them patience in their sufferings,
and a happy issue out of all their afflictions.
All this we ask for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
8. PRAYER FOR GOVERNMENT
Give wisdom to those in authority in every land,
and guide all peoples in the way of righteousness and peace,
so that they may share with justice the resources of the earth,
work together in trust, and seek the common good.
Father, hear our prayer, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
9. PRAYER FOR THE SPREAD OF THE CHRISTIAN GOSPEL
We praise you, Lord of all,
for the gifts of Christ our ascended King:
for apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers.
Hear our prayer for all who do not know your love
and have not heard the gospel of our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Send out your light and truth
through the messengers of your word;
help us to support them by our prayers and offerings,
and hasten the coming of your kingdom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
10. A PRAYER OF COMMITMENT
Eternal God and Father,
by whose power we are created
and by whose love we are redeemed:
guide and strengthen us by your Spirit,
that we may give ourselves to your service,
and live this day in love to one another and to you;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.
